Miraculous, sublime healings and profound revelations naturally occur.
My first visit to the Golden Temple in this lifetime was an unexpected, meditative journey:
On
a Sunday morning before Gurdwara in January of 1996 I received a long
distance phone call from Lisa, a dear friend, asking me to pray for
her. She said acute bronchitis and heart pains had been plaguing her
for several months and that doctors, herbs, acupuncture, healers had
been unable to help.
I consoled her saying "I will be going to Sunday Gurdwara in an hour. Gurdwaras are the best place to pray."
On
my entering the House of Guru Ram Das in Los Angeles, the miracle
Shabad, "Dhan, Dhan Ram Das Gur" was being sung. Perfect! I sat beneath
a painting of a lake in a jungle, the site of the Golden Temple before
it was built, that depicts a black bird flying into the lake and
emerging pure white. Going within myself to pray, I immediately found
myself standing with Lisa on the Choti Parkarma, a narrow marble
walkway that surrounds the Golden Temple, and heard an inner voice
enjoining me to guide my friend into the Nectar Tank.
Lisa
walked in with me up to her shoulders. I was told she must put her head
under the water, but she refused. I placed my hand behind Lisa's neck
and forcefully held her head down against great resistance, totally
submerging her, until she relaxed and was breathing water into her
lungs.
As Lisa became sublimely joyful, I let her rise. Once again I was conscious of sitting in Gurdwara in the House of Guru Ram Das.
I
called Lisa the following morning to see how she was doing. She
exclaimed, "It's amazing! I feel great! My lungs are totally clear and
the heart pains are gone. What kind of prayer did you do?"
I told her what happened and she laughed, "I have always been afraid to put my head under water!"
A few days later, at a
weekday free Langar at the House of Guru Ram Das in Los Angeles, I
overheard two women wondering why most of the paintings on the walls
were of a Golden Temple. I walked over to them and exclaimed, "I know!"
and told them how my friend had been healed and the story of the leper
who, on seeing a black bird emerge white from the pond, healed his leprosy by dipping in the water.
Two
weeks later one of these two women and I almost bumped into each other
in front of the Gurdwara. We greeted each other and asked one another
how were doing--the usual.
The woman smiled and said, "I just saw my doctor. He says everything is fine--I no longer have arthritis or high cholesterol."
"How did that come about?" I asked.
She
laughed, "Over the past two weeks, before leaving my home each morning
I sit on my couch and imagine being at the Godlen Temple, splashing in
the holy water."
